Area Information

Pittsboro, the seat of Chatham County, is in a fast growing area. It is served by State Highways 87 and 902, and is at the intersection of US Highways 15/501 and 64. It is only 16 miles to Chapel Hill and 32 miles west of Raleigh.

European settlers first came into the county as early as the mid 1700s. In 1771 Chatham County was carved out of Orange County. In 1787, commissioners were authorized to purchase 100 acres and Pittsborough was formed as the county seat.

Chatham County is also home to the only known extractable bituminous coal deposits in the state. The area along the Deep River, which forms the border of Chatham and Lee counties, was a major coal producing area between the Revolutionary War and the Great Depression. A fatal mining disaster at the Coal Glen mine in the 1920s, along with frequent flooding sealed the fate of the mines, which were all closed by the 1940s.

Our area enjoys the benefits of a mild continental climate without extremes. Snow is usually more a cause for celebration than a nuisance, with most traces melted by the next day.

Area events include the Fall Festival, the Christmas parade and such attractions as the farmer's markets, gemstone mining, a wildlife preserve and a scenic byway just minutes away. Powell Place is uniquely located to take advantage of the historic charm of Chatham County and Pittsboro.

Schools in Pittsboro include Perry W. Harrison Elementary, Pittsboro Elementary, Horton Middle, Community Independent School, Northwood High and Three Springs. Nearby colleges and universities include Central Carolina Community College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University, Duke University, Meredith College and others.

Hospitals and medical centers near Pittsboro include the University of North Carolina Hospital, Central Carolina Hospital and Chatham Hospital.

It's only a short drive to recreation areas at Jordan Lake State Park, which is adjacent to the state's newest 960-acre natural area along the scenic Haw River. White Pines Nature Preserve is convenient to Jordan Lake. You'll also enjoy the Jordan Lake Educational State Forest, the Organic Fields, Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, the American Tobacco Trail, miles of bicycle trails, the Lower Haw River State Natural Area and others.

Golfers will enjoy the Golf Club at Chapel Ridge, the Governors Club Golf Course, the Preserve at Jordan Lake Golf Club, Twin Lakes Golf Course and others.
